Prom and Evening Gown Alterations: How to Get the Perfect Fit

The dress arrived, you tried it on, and your heart sank just a little. The colour is perfect and the style is everything you wanted – but the bodice gapes at the back, the hem pools on the floor, or the straps slip every time you move. For a prom, a ball or a black-tie evening, ‘almost right’ isn’t quite good enough. You want to walk in feeling unstoppable.

That’s exactly what a good alteration gives you.

Why do prom and evening gowns so rarely fit off the rail?

Occasion dresses are cut to standard sizing, not to your measurements – and very few of us are a single size from shoulder to hip. Many gowns are also bought online or from overseas, where sizing runs differently, so you size up to be safe and end up with fabric to spare. Add boning, linings and delicate beading into the mix and you have a garment that almost always needs a skilled hand to sit the way the designer intended.

What can be altered on an evening dress?

More than most people expect. Common evening and prom alterations include taking in or letting out the bodice for a smooth, supportive fit, shortening or lifting the hem to your heel height, adjusting or restyling straps, and taking in the back of a corset or lace-up gown. Beyond fit, an evening dress can be restyled too – adding a modesty panel or cups, building in a bra for a strapless style, raising a neckline, or adding a discreet bustle so a long train can be lifted for dancing.

When should you book your fitting?

Sooner than you think. For prom season especially, the best appointments fill quickly, so aim to book your first fitting around four to six weeks before the event. That leaves time for a second fitting if the dress needs detailed work, without the panic of last-minute adjustments. Bring the shoes you plan to wear and the underwear you’ll have on under the dress – both genuinely change the hem length and the fit, so they’re worth getting right from the start.

Is it worth altering rather than buying another dress?

Almost always. A well-judged alteration costs a fraction of replacing a gown, and it means you keep the dress you actually fell for rather than settling for whatever else fits. A dress that’s been fitted to you doesn’t just look better in photographs – it feels better to wear all night, with no tugging, slipping or holding your breath.
